Hello everyone, I thought I would post a quick apology regarding the recent spam which has flooded the forums.

You may have seen them flooding the board a few times. Although we have not yet been able to put in place a spam blocker - we have tracked down the culprit, a Mr Sama Kahnah Carine from Douala, Cameroon. I am sorry if you came on the boards during his 'attack'.

Although we have found out this particular individuals identity and will be dealing with it accordingly - I'd just like to remind everyone about disclosing personal details on line. Even if you were ever inclined to break international law by purchasing a fake passport - its highly unlikely you'd get one from a gentleman in Cameron posing as an American businessman!

Thanks for your patience!

Daniel

Oh shit it was a scam? I wired my monies to him. It worked out cheaper than the £1376 for ILR so I had no problems paying the £900 it cost me.

He also recommended in investing in his friend George from Nigeria who needed some money to help children from Ethiopia, I gave him a further £200.

I thought I saved £276 and helped a good cause too?

I totally agree that there is no need to contaminate the forum with multiple posts/threads that say exactly the same thing.

I will also question the need for a "Real and or Legitimate" to make multiple spam posts, especially when some of the posts state that quite a large fee has to be paid upfront.

The situation has become ridiculous.

Out of 12 new posts (according to my count) 11 are SPAM posts.

Four of the post Spamming/Scamming about Fake Passports and all the others Spamming about different things including 3 posts in either Chinese, Japanese or Korean.

Someone suggested a while back that on joining your first post had to be moderated before it was listed. A bit of work for someone, but less frustrating than having to search through for the SPAM.

I would have had no objection if that was the rules when I joined - and some of those with the more exotic coloured stars seem to be willing to undertake a bit of light lifting in support of the integrity of the forum.

I think the only rule for the moderator is that as long as it is not SPAM you get through.

The problem is that the software this forum runs on (MegaBBS) isn't very sophisticated as far as anti-spam features go compared to other more widely used forum software such as IP.Board, phpBB or vBulletin. I run an IP.Board forum and have managed to do quite a good job of keeping the spammers out with the built in options plus some additional custom coding.

The only useful anti-spam measure that can be used from the built-in options in MegaBBS is to require admin approval of every single member registration (rather than an automated email being sent out for self-verification of a registration), however this can be a very tedious and time consuming task and not something I would really want to have to do if I was an administrator.

There are a few standard ways to try and keep spammers registering and posting on a forum, some of which are actually automated bots and not real people and these tend to be the easiest ones to keep out. Options include using a reCAPTCHA image on the registration page and/or asking a specific question that a bot won't know how to answer. However, neither of these are out-of-the-box options in MegaBBS so some customisation would have to be made to the ASP code in order to implement these kind of features. I'm a software developer by trade so it's something I could possibly look into if it would be deemed usefual and worth the effort.

For the time being I think we will just have to put up with the spam and rely on the moderators manually deleting any as and when it appears.

Of the 4 moderators on here, Nick hasn't logged on since the beginning of August, Tony only logs on a few times a week these days, Chris is probably busy most of the time with more important things like trying to run RR, and the new(ish) moderator (Bridgette RR) who I assume is a RR staff member hasn't logged on for two weeks. I've reported at least 10 spam posts since last week but they're still sitting there clogging up the boards unfortunately.

It would be good to know if these are manual spammers or bots because the latter should be fairly easy to keep out with some additional features added to the registration screen.

 Gary,
Like you I keep alerting the moderators using the "Original" skin on the forum, but of course if the moderators do not log in then the alerts just sit there waiting for someone to take action, so as ir stands at the moment there is nothing that can be done apart from putting up with all the Spammers.

I have resorted to using the "New Threads" link on the forums front page, at least that way I get to see if there are any relevant posts.

Like both of you, I automatically report spam posts as soon as I see them as I am another "original" skin user, I used to sometimes leave a sarcastic comment until it was pointed out it caused the mods more work. I have resorted to using see new posts search option for posts which may be of interest to me.

Probably not as this forum is now likely to already be on a global list of easy pickings for spammers so they'll just keep on coming as long as they know they can easily continue to resister accounts and post their spam.

The best way is to stop them is at the initial barrier which is the registration page. The first port of call as previously mentioned would be to replace the standard "verification code" that is currently used with a reCAPTCHA one. That keeps out any spam-bots because they're unable to do an automated image scan of numbers/text from a scrambled up reCAPTCHA image and it will annoy the hell out of manual spammers who sometimes just give up and go to another site where it is less hassle to register.

I've got a copy of the MegaBBS software running on my local machine and it took me less than 30 minutes to make the necessary code changes to the registration screen modules in order to implement reCAPTCHA...

If the admins on here want to give this a try then I will happily email the updated code modules to them.

In cases where reCAPTCHA doesn't work then there are other options that can be used to combat spammers without someone having to keep manually deleting posts and accounts. If all else fails then asking for a reCAPTCHA response whenever a new member submits a post (i.e. which is required until 5 or 10 posts have been reached) and/or restricting the ability for new members to post any web links (again, until they have reached a certain number of posts) will usually be enough to cause manual spammers to give up trying and go somewhere else where it's easier to post their garbage. Again, custom coding is required in MegaBBS to do these things but it wouldn't be rocket science to implement such things with a little bit of work.

Hi Gary - thanks for this, I'll pass it over to the developers to look at and sure, if you have the code that would be great.

We will,. however be changing the forum to a new system later this year, which has in built tools for this, so hopefully ....

PS Happy New Year to you all ....

Chris,

Looks like another 21 spam posts have appeared this morning for fake passports (all from member 'celticm').

I'll get the code modules I modified zipped up along with some instructions for your developers on how to implement the reCAPTCHA code changes and get them sent over to you. You can then decide whether or not to give the reCAPTCHA implementation a go and see if it helps. There's not really anything to lose by trying and it can't end up being any worse.

Can you please PM me your current email address.

Gary

I am running my own board on phpBB3 and have installed a small modification which does not allow bots to register under any circumstances. Only a human can register on my board BUT because I found that I don't get many registrations daily, I switched on the Approval by a moderator. When one new member registers I get an email to Activate the account......... and of course before action the activation I check the details of the new member.

I think the best thing Chris can do to avoid spam, like today, it's to switch on the approval by the mod.

Let's be honest, how many registrations RR gets a day?

I am sure any Mod can handle this in 5 minutes.....

PS: Chris happy to help with this problem if you need me, as I am a pensioner and most time around, at least one time a day.

Moderators on a MegaBBS forum only have the ability to manage forums, not approve new account registrations so that is down to the forum administrators who have a lot more privileges on the board than just moderating forum posts. For this reason I'm sure Chris isn't going to want to start making people outside his company administrators of his company forum due to the potential risks involved in doing that. Forum administrators who also have a normal day job usually have better things to do than spend their time vetting and approving every member registration even if it's only one or two a day.

No-one really wants to be spending their time having to manually approve accounts and/or deleting accounts and posts anyway. Manual approval still requires someone to decide if the user is a potential spammer or not and that can take time to try and ascertain sometimes without conclusive certainty. I was a victim of this myself a few years back on another forum and it was extremely frustrating to take an admin a week to get round to validating my registrations and then keep rejecting them because they thought I might be a spammer. Manual approval is too hit and miss IMO and a wrong decision can just alienate potential genuine members. IMV it should only be used as an absolute last resort and as a short term solution if you get flooded with spam and nothing else is keeping them out.

Unfortunately MegaBBS isn't a commonly used piece of forum software with very few anti-spam options available and it is written in a fairly oldish web technology. The last major release was 4 years ago in January 2009 and the last patch (a very small one) was released in June 2010 which suggests to me that the developers of it have effectively abandoned any further development on the product. There are no plug-ins or community mods available for MegaBBS like there are with other widely used forum software like IP.Board, phpBB and vBulletin. The only solution is to live with the options you get out-of-the-box with MegaBBS or to write some custom modifications to the code yourself which is what I did to implement reCAPTCHA on the new account registration page as shown in the example a few posts back.

I help run/maintain an forum that runs IP.Board software and after getting inundated with spammers, rather than opt for manual account approval we took the decision to change the registration process. After implementing reCAPTCHA along with a couple of other custom questions on the new account registration page, the spamming stopped instantly overnight and we've not had any spammers back since (touch wood).

It does depend on the type of spammers that are targeting your website but with a bit of work there is nearly always a solution that avoids the need for manual intervention.

Another 12 fake passport spam posts tonight by 'tonnycoco' plus another from an 'Anonymous' member in the "UK Visas" forum section so I guess there is a security hole on that particular section which is allowing non-registered users to post there.

TonyH - 2012-11-30 12:10 AM I was here deleting as fast as they bloody posted. See we have another one tonight....link was removed !! I haven't much to add these days the rules have changed far too much and I haven't kept up !!!!!

Its the same with me Tony, I can only re-iterate what those who are going through the loop these days have already stated........

I feel that you have so much knowledge and experience in many areas that are still unchanged, and your sardonic/sarchastic humour, which is all missing from the board these days.....

It is a crying shame that you are conspicuous by your absence......

We are currently being spammed by Cristalkey, around 100 posts now.

Don't mind if I am made a mod on temporary basis to clean up.

ps I have emailed Chris and Info at Real Russia.

I did offer to send the code modifications I made that puts a reCAPTCHA challenge/response on the new account registration screen (might not work but definitely the first thing worth trying IMO) but no-one got back to me so I guess there is no appetite to do anything more than than just manual delete the spam every few days.

I am usually awake about 6 hrs ahead of the UK and ive noticed that a lot of the postings seem to come in overnight (UK time) is it appropriate for me to bump the latests posts to keep them showing on the homepage rather than scam passport etc.. and then supply links to the offending posts here. I cant do it every day but if im online in my morning its possible for me to do it. And it would keep the homepage reasonably clean until an alternative solution is found. Or is this solution not the way forward. I think it would enable the posts to be `unseen` before people in the uk who could be customers see the junk on the homepage

What often happens is that a bot or manual spammer will set up one or more accounts and then plug the account login details into some bot software which then comes along later (maybe even a few days or weeks later) and posts the actual spam messages.

That's why it's important to get the account deleted or suspended ASAP once it is noticed so bots can't keep coming back and using the same spammer account(s) again.

Does this forum allow moderators to "suspend" members from posting? If so then this is the action that should be taken until Chris can physically delete the offending account(s).

Oh dear. 36 spam posts last night. I haven't reported any as it will take too long to go through them all.

Unless an attempt is made to do something pro-active, unfortunately it will just continue to get worse until manually deleting them all then becomes an unmanageable solution.

Oh dear - that looks a bit of a mess. Well spotted. Bit of a sneaky way to post spam so it gets past the radar. Hopefully the mods on here have the required permissions to delete the bogus albums and clean it all up.

not all bots. many of these posters are poorly paid cousins from the sub-continents. some forums deny you the chance to enter a url in until after 10 visits.. no url and they'll soon be away.

Roy you are right
The Scammers are not always bots

On a different note
The last 3 Scam and Spam Fake Passport posts had a non active url

All we can do is to keep notifying the moderators

Today
5 Scam Passport posts + 2 Spam posts

Maybe it is time to make it a requirement that  the fist 10 posts by new members will need to be verified by a captcha, it might  not stop human spammers but it should stop the bots.

The MegaBBS software this forum runs on is about as basic as it gets. There are certainly no out-of-the-box options to do that and it would involve considerable work for someone to write some custom code to implement such a feature. Not to mention that the software is also built using a 15-year old web technology so there is probably no real appetite to invest any time or money developing custom features on such an old technology base.

I thought Chris mentioned about a year ago that they were about to implement new (different) forum software? If that isn't happening it would be nice to at least get back the original non-vomit (and unreadable) colours again in this forum :D

At the very least I think we probably need some new moderators to help manage the forum. It's not a dig at the existing mods but some people have busy lives and their families are now fully integrated into the UK so they have long since moved on from most of the immigration hassles and are likely to have less interest in most of the forum topics these days. TonyH seems to log on every few weeks or so while nickomsk hasn't logged on for 8 months, so that pretty much leaves Chris to manage the forum single handedly as and when he has the time.

Chris,

I will help if I can, but I know nothing about computers, let alone any form of software, and where I live may be problematic...

There are probably some much better persons on the forum than I who will probably also volunteer their services when they read these posts....

I don't mind volunteering as a mod if you want another bod, unless of course someone else particularly wants to step up to the plate.

I don't tend to make many posts these days but have been on the forum a long time and I administer another board so am around most days to try and keep a tab on things.

The issue is not so much in deleting the posts but getting rid of the user very very quickly which the mods can't do (or couldn't) . This leaves the spammer plenty of time to go on spamming until Admin delete them.

I see the SPAM invader from Cameroon, is flooding the board advertising his fake documents and drive everybody crazy.

He tried the same on my board but he has been unlucky .... as my alert system ....... warned me and before he finished posting his second spam...... he was stopped by the Moderator...... me!

To solve the problem is very easy:

I don't think this board has a large number of New members registering every day .... therefore you should switch Registration from automatic to "Approved and Activate" the new account by the Moderator. It will take 1-2 minutes for the moderator to check the new account on the "Stop Forum Spam" site and make a decision.

http://www.stopforumspam.com/

The moderator who is around most of the time... can subscribe to all forums.... and automatically receive an email, whenever a new post is made. That way he does not have to be logged on the board all the time.

Additionally on my board I have added a modification that stops all the automatic Registrations by bots.

PS: Of course I don't know if the software of this board permit these functions.......

another jerk trying to sell landrover hire has just been zapped. It's about 10-15 a week as a rule - so not a big job. but what can we do? the software doesn't allow mods access to suspend accounts until an admin comes along.

Gary offered some Captcha modifications ages ago but no-one from RR came back to him.

onwards..

A constant flow now of spam with some mornings up to 15 items to delete and often more in the afternoon and evening. Spammers must think they've struck gold with this old .asp site.

Can delete the spam - but cant delete the accounts as a mod, so it's very simple for them to come back in and post more. Have PM'd Chris

totally impossible.

Site is written in ancient .asp code and there are no fixes available. Some of us can still write in this language and have offered assistance but all falls on deaf ears...

meanwhile regular offenders long123, phone789, xhanghao123 (same spammer as long123) continue to plague the site.

Guys, do me a favour please and send Chris a DM? Happy to go through all the spam accounts and delete them, but I cant get a reply.

It seems that maybe the RR staff have just lost some interest in the forum in recent times, thus the lack of forum activity or any response from them. Even the other moderators haven't been on here for months (or even years in one case).

I can check, but I'm sure you need to have full admin privileges to be able to delete user accounts on a MegaBBS forum which I doubt any non RR staff member will be given as those privileges also allow you to change (and potentially screw up) the structure and configuration of the forum.

It should be possible to write a bulk post deletion program/script that could be run externally by someone with moderator permissions who has the ability to delete posts. That would at least then take the monotony out of having to do individual deletes. I'm a bit snowed at the moment but I've got a local install of the MegaBBS software on my PC that I used to implement and test a reCaptcha challenge/response a few years back when registering a new account, but if I can find some spare time I'll give it a shot.

The lack of forum activity coincided with the redesigning of the homepage, we used to get up to 25 or 30 guests viewing at a time now its down to 2 or 3.

Guests at an average of 5-20, depends what time of day and the homepage design not related IMO.

Spam certainly will have an impact and becomes tiresome for regular visitors. Have emailed Chris direct this time and deleted 20+ spam messages.

If a cat comes into our back garden and takes a shit, then it takes a shit. I'll pick it up, but I wont go out and pick up cat shit from the same cats for the rest of my life. I'll deal with the cat.

16 guests. There is a reduction in interest in this forum which is a great shame but this is largely attributable to the high level of spam now. I'm not coming on every day and picking up cat shit when the cat should have been dealt with months ago.

I've offered to remove all offending accounts. RR aren't willing to do that or provide admin rights for me to do that. 3 DMs to Chris haven't been read, 3 emails to RR haven't been responded to. One direct email to Chris hasn't been responded to. Gary is possibly correct when he says that there is no interest from RR any more. Great shame in my opinion - used to be a great forum for advice and banter. Is that why your mouse is laffin' Raffi?

Instead of some taking the piss - why don't you all assist and send an email to Chris and tell him that you're fed up with regular spam too and that you believe that this is spoiling a once-great forum? As a moderator I look on this forum at least 3 times a day. You may not see that in the logs because I - for one - can't be arsed to delete up to 80 spam messages in a morning. I have 2 businesses to run.

Assistance Gents please if you're bothered? Mark on this thread that you've contacted RR/Chris too? I'm not going to keep picking up cat shit from these regulars.

I would offer to help out however due my wife's employment with a similar sort of company to Real Russia rules me out helping out with a competing company.

Update: I managed to get a response in the end via Twitter. Next day I was contacted by Chris who has promised a response soon. It appears that Admin were in the site yesterday pm but no spam was removed. I've now deleted it all again - mostly the same old spammers from Korea, Pakistan, etc.

It would be good to get these accounts deleted once and for all and reduce this nonsense. Gary and I have the skills to add updates to this old .asp site to stop a lot of spam in its tracks, whether this would be allowed remains to be seen..

logged in this morning to check for spam - a few.

same old spammers were logged in and posting more spam while I was deleting.

back in at 10am to delete and there's more now, with another spam account logged in and posting while I was deleting.
Mindless!

update on news from RR: there isn't any news. no contact.

and some have been deleted. I will get to the rest in due course this weekend, it will take an hour or more of time to do this. To have the tools to do this in one hit would be useful. To have the permissions to remove these frequent spammers would be of immense help. Gary and I have the skills to assist..

Update:
I have emailed Chris once again having received no reply to my previous email. I have added a read receipt and marked it high priority.

I will approach RR via Twitter again, that appeared to get a timely response last time.

As was privately suggested to me, perhaps business is not so good at the moment and the focus for RR isn't on this forum? I've been around here for 7 years and many guys - for much longer. It would be a shame to see it fold.

I have been trying for 4 months now to get a logical response. I apologise for the spam but there is nothing that I can do, other than access the site 3, often 4 times a day, and to retrospectively remove it.

may I suggest that you good folks email Chris to possibly jolt RR into action? Chris [at] realrussia.co.uk

quick update: RR have promised us assistance from 'inside the company' to stop the spam. A number of repeating spammer accounts have now been deleted and it might be noticeable that spam is so far reduced.

obviously RR staff can't be expected to work weekends and we might have to wade through 80+ hits for a few hours again.

progress....

There are now 2 SCAM and SPAM posts on the forum offering fake documents.

There are also multiple SPAM posts from India on the forum and a few more different Spam posts.

It is a pity that the Administrators or the moderators have not logged onto the forum and removed  the Trash.

Hello Mel.

Today is the 27th of March, the 1st of April is 4 days in the future.
Do you have a time machine so that you can get information from the future.

This is getting ridiculous, so much spam, cannot see any new posts, no wonder the guys and gals don't bother with the forum anymore.

There are now never any of the mods around, whats going on..

Have they given up and all gone home to bed, thinking those that once existed must be dead....

Come on guys and gals, 14.5 pages of scam postings alone in the scams and suspicions thread..

Has everyone lost interest in the forum??

Its really bad news for anyone looking for valuable information contained on the site, and not a good advertisement for Real Russia..

Hi - not lost interest, just got overwhelmed by several spam robots and over 10,000 postings in one day.

We have had to write scripts to automate the removal which has now been completed.

Lets see!!

It is, but the modifications made do not seem to have stopped the spamming yet..

No, they will keep coming back - but now we have an automated way to remove them they will not last, I don't want to have to turn on moderated posts but will if we have to in the short term.

Next we will look to upgrade the forum and social media part of the site to protect against such creatures and provide better facilities.

At this moment we can only delete them during the day - check and kill them as they arrive. Will keep looking for an alternative solution ...

Hello Chris

I my opinion the better option will be to insure that posts made by new members on the forum should be verified by the moderators.

Because of the multiple SPAM and SCAM posts it is very difficult for  finding relevant new posts
OK if the first posts that are made by a relevant new member on the forum will not appear on the forum until verified by a moderator the New members might be a bit unhappy.

But in my opinion the Multiple SPAM and SCAM posts on the forum are a disaster for Real Russia.

Multiple SCAM and SPAM posts have been made on the Forum by many SCAMMERS
The SCAM Posts are offering Illegal documents that have the potential of breaking International Law

If somebody does attempt to use a illegal document then they will have a serious potential of spending a lot of time in a Government Sponsored Holiday Camp

A Government Sponsored Holiday Camp is:
In English Prison
In Spanish  Prisión
In French Prison
In Russian Tyur'ma

It is a pity that the Moderators and the Administrators have not logged onto the forum to remove the Multiple SCAM posts.
