I was wondering how strict they are about passport expiry dates when applying for a Russian visa.

On the document I'm currently reading, the requirement is:

"1. Current passport which should be valid for a minimum of six months after visa's expiration date and
has at least 2 blank pages which do not need to be consecutive."

I will leave Russia on 30 August 2017, but will apply for a visa to expire on 3 September (in case of any delays), so six months after would be 3 March 2018. My passport expires on 22 March 2018, so it's a bit close.

Well, your passport will expire 19 days after the visa expiry date, so you have nothing to worry about.

Sorry, ignore my last post. I completely misread the rules.
