RZD the Russian Rail Operator has announced a new project to pilot true e-tickets on selected routes in Russia.  This will allow passengers to board without a physical paper ticket by only showing their passport when boarding the train.

RZD call this scheme "e-registration".

1. The date of introduction of the pilot project is 1st June 2009.

2.  The selected trains and routes:
  • Moscow – St-Petersburg (trains № 55/56, 23/24, 3/4, 159/160, 165/166),
  • Moscow –  Nizhny Novgorod – Moscow (trains № 61/62, 119/120),
  • Moscow – Kazan – Moscow (trains № 49/50).

3. These trains won’t be reflected in our online system and e-tickets may only be obtained by contacting our operators and specifically requesting them.

4. E-registration will work only for direct routes and stop-overs are not allowed.

5. If a passenger exchanges an e-voucher for a physical ticket at a rail station their e-registration is automatically cancelled.

6.  E-registration can be cancelled at a railway station in the booking office or by an e-terminal machine not later than one hour  before the departure of a train.

Real Russia will have the capability to provide e-registration for passengers but this will be by request only.

Chris -

Delighted to see this development and your involvement in it. (I expect you pushed them into the idea!)
Congratulations.

Any chance of Moscow / St P <--> Helsinki coming any time soon?

(We bought family tx SPb >--< Helsinki the other day over the phone in SPb, and apart from the courier delivery charge the tickets were wrong when they came!

Well you can always order e-voucher from us, that is we book the tickets and send you a voucher by email that you print and exchange for tickets at the station. That is available for all routes out of Russia - but not all into.
