I am thinking of going on the train from Moscow to St. Petersburg. Are tickets cheaper if you are over 60 years old? Also I am a UK citizen, so if tickets in Russia are cheaper for the over 60s does it also apply to UK citizens?

If there is a discount how much would I get ? I would prefer to buy a ticket through Real Russia, would I still get a discount.

Finally, class of seat. I see that I can get a single seat only ticket for about £20 in, I think, 2nd class. Is third class not very comfortable? Would I be better off with a cabin? If so, how does it work. I shall be by myself. Do they bung you in a cabin with 3 random strangers ??

No there no discount for you on that route, children get a 50% discount and believe under 3 years who sit on their parents lap travel free.
For £20 it won't be 2nd class, that's just a seat in a carriage, 3rd will buy you a shelf with about 50 others it's an open compartment. If you go 2nd they are 4 person compartments so yes there's a chance you'll be stuck with 3 strangers.

Besides been over 60 years old you also need to be Hero of the Soviet Union or be participant of the Great Patriotic War - then you get your discounts. If not then sorry, come next time...

In any case, following this through, there are many (daytime) trains with - amazingly - seats. In fact, as I think I remember, my wife and stepdaughter managed there and back in a day (OK, the other way round) to catch a couiple of museums. Without a sleeper.

I think your memory is playing tricks on you. The shortest train journey time used to be about six hours.
So a day trip between Moscow and St. Petersburg taking in a couple of museums is a bit unlikely.

Further to the earlier reply, you can get a seat, a seat in a 4 person cabin or buy a single cabin. If you get the nice new fast express the journey time is about 3 hours.
But no discounts for old blokes

no discounts for elderly on standard domestic trains I am afraid, only children, and yes with the new Sapsan trains you can day trip between Moscow and St Petersburg, there is a monring train which leaves at about 6.45 arriving at 10.35 and an evening train which depart from between 16.00 and 19.30 which will get you back same day in about 3 1/2 hours.

Many thanks everyone. A related question: do foreigners get charged more than Russians for train tickets? (I do get charged more in museums in Moscow).

I got a train from Spb. to Vyritsa Sunday. It was the same price as locals. Might just have been lucky. It was early !

No in Russia they don't have separate rates for foreigners on the trains, I did hear something about the museum prices being harmonized but I'm not too sure about the current situation. Russians use the argument that the museums are subsidise by their taxes which is why they get discount on admissions.
